In a séance, the spirit medium acts as a conduit to the spirit world, using the energy of the group who will also be the ones asking questions for the spirits to answer. These answers are often done in the form of something as simple as knocks and raps on the walls or some other strange noise, or to something more complex as moving objects, and even possession of the medium, with the spirit or spirits talking through them.

Because it was often attributed to occult practices over the centuries, séances were viewed with fear, and its practitioners often thought of as delusional at best and devil-worshipping at worst. But why is this the case? Shouldn’t a technique that allows the living to converse with the dead be thought of as useful?

History of controversy, increase of risk

Most famous séances in recent history often ended up as hoaxes, with the mediums and even the participants eventually admitting to being frauds. In fact, even the proponents of the first modern séance, the Fox sisters, eventually admitted to faking the whole thing. This has lead to a negative opinion of séance practitioners and mediums in general, which has had the unfortunate result of turning the idea into something casual and easily tried by inexperienced folks.

And this is where the problems begin to rise. Because a séance is a powerful technique that should not be underestimated.

With the séance being considered a Hollywood or pop-culture fad, many people have tried doing this, unprepared, and have suffered the consequences. When a séance is done, the medium, whether intentionally or unintentionally, will open a fissure to the spirit world.

Should the group not be prepared, they will not be able to stem the energies that will pass through this fissure, and can cause them great distress, prolonged communications with the dead long after the séance is complete. As well, if it is a séance to investigate a haunting or a haunted place, the entity haunting may latch on to the group, and go home with them. It is not something to be trifled with.

So is it safe to actually do a séance?

If you are prepared, the answer is yes. And if you really want to do a séance, these are some steps to make it very safe.

1.)    Always have a medium – while it is possible to do séances on your own, it may require a high level of consciousness and understanding of the spirit realm to do it safely. 2.)    Finalize your purpose – before the gate to the spirit world is opened, you must decide on your purpose. If you are doing a séance just out of curiosity, the medium should know beforehand. As well, if you are doing a séance to deal with a haunting, or to communicate with a dead loved one, that should be solidified prior as well.

3.)    Have the right group – your séance group should be with people of the right mindset and purpose. Those who will not take it seriously will simply taint the energy of the group and should be left out.

4.)    Have the right tools – séances will require some tools, which the medium may ask from you, or you can ask from the medium, depending on your purpose.

5.)    Be at the right place – be at the right location for a séance. This usually involves having a round table, a quiet space, and spots where candles, incense, and flowers can be placed, in addition to spiritual wards like amulets and talismans.
